Thomas McEwan, a Health Sciences Scholarship recipient and student at the University of Otago (Christchurch), is currently completing his Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Honors, majoring in Drugs and Human Health. With aspirations to become a doctor, Thomas is also deeply committed to cancer research.

In five years, I see myself as a medical graduate contributing to New Zealand’s healthcare system and continuing my research into cancer treatment,” says Thomas. “This work is incredibly important to me, and I hope to make a real difference.

When he’s not studying, Thomas finds balance in the gym, on the golf course, or catching up with friends. Raised in the Sumner Ferrymead area and now living in McCormacks Bay, he recalls how bike rides through the Port Hills during lockdown helped him stay grounded. The community's support, he says, has played a vital role in his success.

The scholarship has helped me continue my research through a summer internship, and I’m beyond grateful to the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation and other sponsors. Their belief in my goals means everything.
