First-year carpentry apprentice Nico Taiarahia Heather is the recipient of the Apprentice Award, supported by Laser Plumbing. With plans to travel the world as a certified builder, Nico is already making strides in his career while staying grounded in his Sumner roots.

Nico balances work with kickboxing and jiu-jitsu, staying active both mentally and physically. He also works part-time at the Red Snapper in Sumner, staying connected with the community he loves. “Having family so close is one of the best things about living here. That support system means a lot.

He’s also keenly aware of the rising cost of living and the challenges young people face. “It’s tough, especially when you're starting out. But I’m focused on working hard and making the most of every opportunity.
